Keeping Food Markets Safe

Practical guidance to prevent the spread of COVID-19

The Client / GAIN

The challenge

In many countries, especially in developing countries, food markets are the main retail outlet for produce. They are both a place where consumers buy food and producers can sell food, vegetables, meat and fish.

However, with the spread of COVID-19, markets could become hotspots for virus transmission. Consumers, sellers and market organisers need to be made aware of the risks and specific guidance for markets needed to be developed.

What we did

We developed a specific set of practical messages for each target audience and developed training material for market organisers, materials that could be displayed or distributed at markets and short awareness clips optimised for dissemination via social media or WhatsApp.

Results

The material was adapted in a multitude of languages and used at markets in several African countries as well as Bangladesh.
